NOTIONES are delighted to announce the publication of a new whitepaper “Navigating the noise: Redefining security amidst volatile radicalisation dynamics”, published in collaboration with the European Institute and the international Centre of Excellence for Secure Society (CESS).
The European Institute, an independent civil‑society organisation and policy and research centre leading in interdisciplinary European Union studies and policies, is collaborating with NOTIONES to publish a collection of important analytical whitepapers developed under the project “Capacity building through exchange of good practices and research in the security domain”, led by the European Institute, and co‑funded by the European Union, Program of the Republic of Bulgaria under the Internal Security Fund 2021–2027 (BG65ISPR001‑3.004‑0002).
The collection of whitepapers forms part of one of the key project activities aimed at establishing the international Centre of Excellence for Secure Society (CESS), conceived as a platform for integrating knowledge, exchanging best practices, and fostering dialogue among the academic community, practitioners, and institutions.
This first whitepaper is authored by Barbara Lucini (PhD in Sociology and Methodology of Social Research), a researcher at the Faculty of Humanities, Catholic University of Sacred Heart, Milan, and aims to propose an analysis of the concept and phenomenon of radicalization by advancing a perspective grounded in the consideration of its evolution over the past twenty years, one that can incorporate the most significant changes and current trends from both a social and national and international security standpoint. The purpose of this contribution is to provide a reflection on theoretical and methodological approaches to the phenomena of radicalization and violent extremism, with a particular focus on European policies and on the Italian case. This is expected to be particularly useful for those directly involved in the management of such phenomena, as well as for those seeking to better understand the underlying dynamics that expose a large portion of contemporary societies to the risk of radicalization and to conditions of vulnerability.
This whitepaper is part of the series published by NOTIONES, presenting the findings of the analytical work of established international experts, who examined three key thematic areas: radicalisation, extremist propaganda, and human trafficking. All publications align with the NOTIONES vision of applying critical interdisciplinary approaches and the search for practical solutions and recommendations for policy changes in the context of a rapidly evolving security domain.
All whitepapers in this collection reinforce the mission of the European Institute and CESS, by calling for an increasingly integrated, multidisciplinary, and knowledge‑based approach to combat all manner of contemporary security threats.
